Mayor Urges Engagement in Democracy

On Thursday, February 21, 2013, Skokie’s Mayor George Van Dusen, delivered a lecture, “The Origin of Democracy” as part of the 2013 Coming Together in Skokie events at Skokie Village Hall. An audience of approximately thirty Skokie residents, Zarem-Golde ORT Institute’s Communication 101 students, and guests heard the Mayor’s presentation that compared ancient Greek and American democracies.

A previous speaker, Dr. Theodore Zervas, professor at North Park University, discussed democracy as it was practiced in ancient Greece. Mayor Van Dusen cited Dr. Zervas’ insights regarding democratic governance, noting the importance of a sound understanding of democracy for contemporary Americans.

He emphasized the significance of the liberty to learn and the necessity of governmental checks and balances in a nation of enlightened and informed citizens. As he described the American Revolution, Mayor Van Dusen urged his listeners to heed the failures of past democracies and  actively engage in preserving the robust democracy enjoyed in the U.S.

The two speakers were well-received and they joined the audience for refreshments in the foyer. Mayor Van Dusen told Z-G ORT’s Dr. Nick Ioannou that he would be happy to be of help to ORT Technical Institute in any way he could, and he complimented the Institute for its successful service to such a diverse student population. This event, which was part of the month-long “Coming Together in Skokie” program, was a great success.
